A Better Way To Think About Productized Services

Productized services are NOT black and white...

Here's a better way to think about it.

Think of productized services as a continuum and ask yourself...

On one side you have services. On the other, we have a product.

Productized services are in the middle.

The question is, "How productized do I want to be?"

As Jack Butcher eloquently stated...


👉 Service is work without process.
👉 Productized services work with a process.
👉 Products are processed without work.


I have clients that want NOTHING to do with client service delivery and so their model and offerings skew far to the right.

I have other clients who love being a part of the client experience and want to offer up certain levels of customization, they find themselves near the middle.

I have some clients that want to scale to the moon...they are more 'product'.

I have others that want high profit, want to stay small, and thus can be more towards the middle or a bit more left.

There are a variety of ways to make a service more like a product.

Many ingredients will give you more leverage in delivery vs not.

You get to decide.

Your goals and values will drive where you are on the continuum.
